Born Free USA says recent cases pose “serious animal welfare and public health concern.”

Scientists confirmed the case of SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19 in humans) in mink at two fur farms in Utah.

Angela Grimes, Born Free USA CEO, said:

Born Free USA is extremely concerned about the developing situation in Utah – a situation that was all too predictable given the conditions in these facilities.
As we have seen in Europe, the disease spreads quickly across fur farms. If it is on two farms in Utah today, there is a good chance it could be on 10 next week, and moving into different states shortly after that.

Around a million Mink were killed in the Netherlands due to the spread of COVID-19 at mink farms and reportedly around 100,000 killed in Spain, according to The Guardian.
