Animal rights activist appealing jail sentence after freeing bear from trap
An animal rights activist who admitted to helping free a bear from a trap is appealing her sentence.
50-year-old Catherine McCartney, 50, of Vernon, was jailed for 15 days by a Municipal Court judge last week.
McCartney said in a statement, “These animals are innocent and so I made the moral decision to let the bear go so he could run back to his mother, and it was the right thing to do,”
She remains out of jail until the outcome of her appeal.
McCartney had pleaded guilty to two counts, obstructing a governmental function by means of interference and disturbing the condition of real property intended for use in the lawful taking of wildlife.
She admitted that on October 27, she released a cub from a trap set by the state Division of Fish and Wildlife.
McCartney was also fined $1,191.
