Chicago to ban horse-drawn carriages after Council decision
Chicago is set to ban horse-drawn carriages from next year.
The City Council announced today (Friday) they will stop issuing new licenses.
They will also no longer renew the 10 existing licenses when they expire.
The current licenses expire at the end of 2020.
Chicago Alliance for Animals executive director Jodie Wiederkehr told CBS:
“Chicago officials finally saw how Chicago’s horse carriage operators refuse to self regulate and banned this inhumane, archaic and dangerous relic before a human or horse suffers or dies from this unnecessary activity, like so many have in other cities.
“Chicago is a world class city and doesn’t need to depend on animal exploitation for a vibrant tourism industry.”
