New survey shows 5% drop in British dairy farmers, but milk production reaching near 17 year high
A new survey from the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) suggests there was a 5% reduction in the number of dairy producers in Great Britain between February 2019 and April 2020
The survey also revealed production in April was the 2nd highest over the last 17 years.
There were an estimated 8,380 dairy producers in Britain at the end of the period looked at, a reduction of 470 producers from February 2019.
Chris Gooderham, AHDB's head of market specialists for dairy said:
"Poor weather conditions earlier in the year caused challenges to some for spring turnout.
"Despite both these challenges, April milk production reached an estimated 1,094m litres – the second highest for 17 years."
