New York City declares a climate emergency

New York City council has officially declared a climate emergency.

The Council passed legislation urging action to tackle the current climate catastrophe.

It stated the planet is "too hot to be a safe environment."

The council resolution said:

“New York City, as the largest city in the United States, can act as a global leader by both converting to an ecologically, socially, and economically regenerative economy at emergency speed, and by organizing a transition to renewable energy and climate emergency mobilization effort,"

It follows in the footsteps of United Kingdom which was the first country to declare a climate emergency, swiftly followed by the Irish government.
