OPINION: BEYOND BURGERS LAUNCH AT TESCO - BUT COULD THEY BE BEYOND THE BUDGET?
By Tom Lane
Plant-based burger brand Beyond Meat has arrived at Tesco in the UK - but the price might put you off.
Two Beyond Burger patties are currently priced at £5.50 in stores.
It is stocked alongside conventional fresh meat patties in more than 350 branches.
The vegan movement is often tarnished by critics who say that the movement is a symbol of white privilege. That a plant-based diet is elitist or classist.
The price of these burgers is almost unattainable for the just about managing. £2.25 per patty is absurd and feeds that criticism from carnists.
Seth Goldman, Beyond Meat’s executive chair told The Guardian: "We see the growing global demand for delicious, plant-based proteins and are excited to serve that demand in the UK with the revolutionary Beyond Burger.
"Bringing our innovative approach to merchandising to the UK, Tesco will sell the Beyond Burger in the chilled meat aisle alongside animal-based proteins."
Yes, the burgers will be stocked alongside the chilled meat aisle which I think is a good thing and overall it is positive to see more vegan/plant-based products in British supermarkets, but in order to appeal to the mass, more products need to be available to the poorest in our society.
