Vast increase in industrial pig and chicken farms in the U.K.—report
Figures released after an investigation by The Guardian and Bureau of Investigative Journalism, reveals a vast increase in industrial size pig and chicken farms in the UK.
According to research there are now around 2,000 across the country.
The data shows a 7% increase from 1,669 to 1,786 in just over two years. In England, the number of permitted intensive livestock facilities was 1,313 by February 2020.
Wales saw a 21% increase with a 10% rise in Scotland since 2017.
In that year, the then environment secretary Michael Gove told MPs, “One thing is clear: I do not want to see, and we will not have, US-style farming in this country.”
A spokesperson for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs told The Guardian:
“The UK has some of the highest animal welfare and environmental standards in the world. This means all livestock farms, regardless of their size or scale, must meet our high standards and comply with robust legislation.”
