VEGAN PINEAPPLE FASHION COMING TO A STORE NEAR YOU
A clothing designer in London is pushing ethical fashion with a pineapple leather alternative.
Carmen Hijosa has created Piñatex, a textile woven from the long fibers in the fruit’s discarded leaves.
She told Reuters: "Because of their characteristics — they’re very fine and strong and flexible - my idea was what if I make a mesh with these fibers, not unlike what leather is.
"And that was the beginning of this new material."
The material is vegan-friendly and Hijosa founded the company Ananas Anam to market Piñatex.
It commercially launched in 2015, with a number of items created including vegan sneakers sold by fashion house Hugo Boss.
